Christmas at Piko Wholefoods Co-operative ... is always busy – don't let this put you off – there is a good reason for the bustle!
Come in and see for yourself how yummy Christmas could be ...
Piko is well known for the quality, freshness and range of the organic and non-organic dried fruits and nuts we sell. These are packaged in 125g, 250g, 500g and 1kg cellophane bags.
There are several varieties of organic grape and fruit juices and several non-alcoholic sparkling bottles for festive family dinners.
Think about a special breakfast – we have a huge range of organic cereals aimed at children and only $5.25 a box (as cheap as a box of sprayed grains!).
There are also organic gluten-free cereals, gluten free pancake mixes and organic maple syrup, which is available in bottles and also on tap.
Our range of organic fresh fruit and vegetables has been greatly extended and the produce this season is beautiful.
Remember that the worst foods from the point of view of pesticide residues are bread, broccoli, onions, tomatoes, celery, cucumbers, apples, strawberries and raisins and sultanas. Close contenders for the list are lettuce, diary products, meat, and potatoes. (ref. 'Healthy Options' Nov. 2000.) Come in and have a pesticide free Christmas – your children will thank you for it.

Piko Wholefoods Co-operative was established in 1979. It is a non-profit making organization that donates extra money to charities around Christchurch.
This policy means that the mark-up on organic food can be kept to a minimum.
We have a reputation for being environmentally responsible. We encourage the return of plastic shopping bags, egg containers and clean containers that customers can reuse for the bulk goods we sell. These bulk products include open sack grains, pulses, beans and seeds and on tap honeys, vinegars, oils and tahini.

Shop Talk...
'Tis the season to be lazy...Jandals, tents, and Baked Beans in cans... we are talking organic here! Yes we have plenty cans of organic baked beans, refried beans, and every other kind of popular bean you can think of, including
Spicy Mexican Bean Soup, Broccoli and Cheddar Soup and others. We also have instant flavoured organic cous cous and instant organic soup powders.

Old Bags.... We have two calico bags by the vege stand with recycled plastic bags for fruit and vege. And paper bags under the pie warmer for open sack seeds, grains, pulses, pies and snacks.
We really appreciate that many of our customers bring in their own bags, baskets and packs to use. Just shows that some of these 'good old fashioned' habits are still possible in our fast, throwaway, consumer, modern living.
Labels: we are working on a clearer, more informative, but simple, labelling system for you. This includes a system of labelling all our products that are Gluten Free. This is not complete but look out for the circles stating on flour and grains and purple circles on other products.
We are also sticking to our orange for organic and blue for non-organic system.
Keep an eye out.
Walnut Shortage: 'Twas a bad season ...coupled with the growing popularity of our walnuts recently, we cannot get anymore than we are getting sorry.

New Products...
For those of you have had no time to bake festive fare... we have Stollen - a rich fruit cherry and almond log with a marzipan centre $8.50
OR Dairy, sugar, and egg-free organic xmas cakes - $17.55
Buckwheat bran: $3.08 for 500 gm
If you are going bush...or not! we have non-organic and organic sundried tomatoes. The organic have just arrived in and are quite stunning. $5.86 for 250g.
Starflax: You may have noticed we have yet another good oil from Waihi Bush oil mill. 'Starflax' has an abundant source of Omega 3 and GLA. You can read more about this in their pamphlet provided.
They recommend taking it if you are starting out building up your Omega 3 (you can read all about that in the 'Fats and Oils' newsletters). Then you can move to Flaxseed after 1-3 months, for 6 months to 6 years, depending on your
health. Then move to Essential balance, to maintain a balance of omega's 3 and 6.
White Rye Flour: lighter than Rye flour, works well in baking (except pancakes) 1 kg is $2.81.

Recipe:

A Festive gluten-free Spicy Pumpkin Cake

This is also Dairy-free (with eggs), Sugarfree, and a very nice, fruity-citrus tasting, cake. Good for cutting into shapes for children's (and adult's!) birthday cakes, as it holds together well. We still have pumpkins for sale at Piko.

¾ cup steamed mashed pumpkin cold
2 eggs slightly beaten
¾ cup sultanas
¾ cup raisins
1 ½ cup mixed peel
¾ cup finely chopped dried apricots
1 cup unsweetened orange juice
1 ¼ cup brown rice flour
½ cup soy (or millet flour)
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp mixed spice

Combine fruit and juice in a saucepan. Bring to the boil and simmer for 1 minute. Cool.
Combine the pumpkin, eggs and fruit mix and beat till smooth. (trick is to get a good rise so blender or overbeating is not advisable unless you add the eggs at the end of beating.)
Sift the flour, baking powder and spice together and stir into the fruit. Pour into a greased tin and bake at 165 C for approx. 1 hour.
Serve with organic icing sugar.

A thought for you from Piko Wholefoods...
The word 'health is derived from the old German root word for "whole' which implies all parts are present, properly arranged, and properly functioning in harmonious balance.
Another root word meaning of the word health is 'hale' (also meaning whole) and 'holy' which may also be related to the word 'health' in its original meaning.
...We wish you, our valued customers, a holy, healthful Christmas and New Year.
